On Friday, February 6th, O’Gorman High School recognized students with excellent and/or improved attendance for Semester 1.
Students were surprised in their Period 1 classrooms by a squad of attendance cheerleaders, made up of students and staff members. The attendance cheerleaders presented students with balloons that included an invitation to participate in an AttenDANCE, over the lunch hour, to celebrate their achievement.
At the AttenDANCE, lunch was provided and students were presented with a Certificate of Achievement. This surprise activity was in follow up to the Principal’s Challenge launched at the beginning of the year, challenging students to be in class daily. An assembly was held to explain the campaign and to announce that the Principal’s Challenge will continue for Semester 2. The O’Gorman Student Organization highlighted relevant information regarding the importance of school attendance.
Kim Meunier, Attendance Counsellor, reminds students and parents that regular attendance is the surest path to success on the journey of learning.
The AttenDANCE campaign was developed by members of the Attendance Committee. The Attendance Committee (Darren Berthier, Laura Kelly, Kim Meunier, Chandra Ciccone, Belinda Ritchie, Amanda Maxwell, Dan Loreto, Andrew Black and J.P. Gauvin) analyzed data and met with students at risk to support them in their attendance struggles. OHS AttenDANCE Celebrations Pictures

Students were able to hear personal stories and learn to better appreciate the circumstances and sufferings that drive people to the hard life of street life. The focus of our retreat was from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 25: ‘whatever you did for the least of these, my brothers and sisters, you did for me.’ While students ministered to the poor, they were challenged to think of how they were being ministered to at the same time. The theme of the campaign is "Picture Your Future" and involves the use of green screen technology to place the students in a career background of their choosing. The students dress up, and then stand in front of a green screen and have their picture taken. Every person in the picture will receive their own copy of the image, and each image will have a unique QR code (specific to that picture only, so only the students who get the image will be able to download it or share it). The QR code will take the students to a mobile website which will allow them to download the image to their personal smart phone, and share the image with their family and friends, as well as through their personal social media.
