The O’Gorman Intermediate girls basketball team continues its domination at an annual North Bay tournament. - 2014-01-31
Text Taken from Timmins Daily Press:
This past weekend, both the girls and boys O'Gorman Intermediate Knights went to North Bay to participate in the Junior Tomahawk Basketball tournament.
The girls were victorious in all five games they played, winning by double digits to take the championship
"The girls played aggressive and used their defensive pressure early to build their large leads," said head coach Chris Seguin. "The entire team contributed in each game which was key to having fresh legs for the finals."
The girls beat the Algonquin Grade 8 team 30-14 in the finals.
The Knights Arianna Gagnon was named a tournament all-star while Emma Weltz was named the tournament MVP. The Knights have yet to lose a game in two years for a record of 43-0.
The boys also had a successful weekend making it to the finals.
Unlike the girls, however, the boys had to battle through each game against some tough competition.
"Our defence was the difference maker in our success this weekend," said head coach Jamie Lamothe. "We through a lot of different things defensively that seemed to throw off the other teams. Every game was low scoring and defence was key to each win."
The Knights beat West Ferris, St. Thomas Aquinas and Algonquin to reach the finals. There they played a tough and well-coached St. Hubert team.
The Knights ended up edging St. Thomas 21-15.
"This game was a dog fight to the very end," said Lamothe. "We really locked in defensively and held off their top players. We were short handed this weekend with a few guys having other commitments so it was important for everyone to go in and give their all for the time they were on the floor, and they did just that. This strategy proved well while the opposing team had a full 15-team roster but only played six players the entire game."
Knights guard Jonathan Okonmah was named an all-star and finished the game with seven points while forward Parker Gilbert was named tournament MVP and scored a game-high 13 points in the final game. OICS Grade 8 Girls' Basketball Team Picture

It has been another successful season for the O’Gorman Intermediate Catholic School grade 8 girls’ basketball team. The girls finished the regular season undefeated for a second year in a row and captured two tournament titles. “The girls have shown continuous improvement in their individual skills and ability to work as a successful team” says Coach Weltz. “They are a committed group of young athletes who dedicate a significant amount of their time to practicing and playing the game as often as possible”. As they pursue their love of the game, they are learning many valuable lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and commitment both on and off the court. The girls have finished their intermediate careers 38 and O which includes league and tournament play and now have their sights set on high school. OICS Grade 8 Girls' Basketball Team Picture

OICS Steps up to Stop Bullying - 2013-11-19
OICS is launching Anti-Bullying Awareness Week with a class anti-bullying poem challenge that will be judged on Thursday, Nov. 21st. These poems will be displayed on each homeroom door. We are also going to be giving each student a pink bandana that the students are invited to wear for the week. We want the students to either create a slogan, write words that demonstrate a pro-active attitude towards bullying. this is a great way to showcase what OICS is doing against bullying. Kind of ties in with our virtue of the month - prudence (being wise and making wise decisions). "A Not So Despicable Christmas" Poster
