Indigenous Education

Walking Together Through Indigenous Education and Reconciliation

At the Northeastern Catholic District School Board, we are deeply committed to advancing truth, reconciliation, and healing through our Indigenous Education initiatives. Guided by Catholic values and in partnership with Indigenous communities, we honour the histories, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples.

Indigenous Education at NCDSB is rooted in respect, relationship, and responsibility. We strive to create inclusive and culturally responsive learning environments where all students—Indigenous and non-Indigenous—can deepen their understanding, foster meaningful connections, and walk together on a path of reconciliation.

We invite you to explore our programs, resources, and commitments to Indigenous Education. Together, we are working to embed Indigenous perspectives across our schools and build a more just and compassionate future for all.

Self-Identification

All Indigenous students and their parents are entitled to voluntarily self-identify. The NCDSB believes this is essential in helping students feel welcome, engaged and to see themselves and their cultures reflected in the curriculum and school community. Self-identification increases our abilities to respond to the cultural and learning differences of Indigenous students, and to support their success in school.

Learning Through Indigenous Perspectives and Services

The NCDSB is pleased to offer a variety of Indigenous based services to all students. The NCDSB is focused on closing the opportunity and achievement gap for Indigenous students by providing culturally relevant and accessible programming. The focus on infusing Indigenous perspectives across the curriculum for all students strengthens connection, awareness and a sense of belonging. Thus enhancing overall achievement and wellbeing.

NCDSB Territorial Acknowledgement

Aanii, We acknowledge that our Northeastern Catholic District School Board Office is located on the traditional Lands of Mattagami First Nation, Flying Post First Nation, and Matachewan First Nation, home to many Ojibway, Cree, Oji-Cree, Algonquin and Métis people. We honour and respect the Indigenous people who are the original keepers of the land. We appreciate the many gifts that the land and water provide to our families, our friends and our neighbours. We walk together as stewards of the land, committed to building relationships and reconciliation through our actions and our words. We share in a promise to treat the land and the people who live on it with kindness and respect.
