Pathway Programs

Opening Pathways to Careers and Future Success

Our school board is dedicated to helping every student find their unique path to success. We offer a variety of high school programs designed to give students hands-on learning experiences and a head start on their chosen careers. These programs allow students to earn high school credits while exploring potential career fields and developing valuable skills. Below is an overview of the pathway programs available to our students at O’Gorman High School.

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP)

OYAP is a school-to-work program that allows students to explore and work in a skilled trade. Beginning in the summer before Grade 11, students can earn cooperative education credits while beginning their apprenticeship. Hours worked during their co-op placements may be credited towards their apprenticeship training. A specific stream, OYAP-FAST (Focused Apprenticeship Skills Training), is designed for students who want to maximize their apprenticeship training before graduating. These students can earn a seal on their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) for their enhanced skilled trades learning.

Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)

An SHSM is a Ministry of Education-approved program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector. Students complete a bundle of 8-10 courses, a cooperative education placement, and sector-recognized certifications. Upon graduation, students receive an embossed SHSM seal on their diploma and a record card detailing their achievements, which can provide an advantage when applying to college, university, or the workplace. Our schools currently offer SHSM programs in Health and Wellness and Hospitality and Tourism.

Dual Credit Programs

Dual Credit programs allow eligible students to take college or apprenticeship courses that count toward both their high school diploma and their post-secondary credentials. These programs are offered in partnership with Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology. Students at risk of not graduating, those in SHSM or OYAP, or those returning to high school to get their diploma may be eligible. For example, the OYAP Dual Credit Level 1 program allows students to complete a semester of cooperative education in a trade while also completing their Level 1 apprenticeship training at a partner college.

Cooperative Education

Cooperative education, or Co-op, is a Ministry of Education-approved program that combines classroom learning with practical work placements. Students can earn multiple credits while exploring a career pathway and developing essential job-related skills. The program is structured with pre-placement activities to prepare students for the workplace, the work placement itself, and integration activities for reflection and future planning. It is a fantastic way for students to gain real-world experience and confirm their career interests.
