Special Education

Celebrating Every Learner Through Special Education

At the Northeastern Catholic District School Board, our mission is to ensure an attitude of welcomed acceptance and a celebration of individual differences among students, parents, and staff. We believe that all teachers are special educators and that our Catholic schools educate the whole child, celebrating the uniqueness of every student. The goal of our Special Education programs, services, and resources is to help exceptional students reach their full academic, physical, social, and emotional potential.

Our Approach to Special Education

We operate on an inclusionary model, focusing on providing programs and services within the context of the regular classroom whenever possible. We believe that most exceptional students can have their needs met in their home schools using a variety of teaching strategies and appropriate accommodations or modifications. Students have different abilities, rates and styles of learning and therefore require different resources to assist them with their learning.

Programs are developed from the individual student’s strengths and needs, with a focus on early identification and intervention. Our school board is committed to allocating resources, and providing specialized programs and services, in response to identified student needs.

Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC)

The Special Education Advisory Committee is a committee of trustees and members from local associations and agencies. Its role is to make recommendations to the board regarding the establishment, development, and delivery of special education programs and services for exceptional students. SEAC is involved in the annual review of the NCDSB Special Education Plan and participates in the development of the annual budget for special education.

Parent Guide to Special Education

Parents play an essential role in supporting students with exceptional needs. Our Parent’s Guide offers practical information to help families make informed decisions and ensure every child receives the care, understanding, and services needed to reach their full potential.

NCDSB Special Education Plan

Our school board is committed to allocating resources, and providing specialized programs and services, in response to identified student needs.

The Individual Education Plan (IEP)

An IEP is a written plan describing the special education program and/or services required by a particular student, based on a thorough assessment of strengths and needs that affect the student's ability to learn and demonstrate learning.

The Special Education Advisory Committee meets regularly throughout the year to discuss ongoing initiatives, review progress, and provide input on emerging needs and priorities.
